About Us

The Founder Kalapathi Lakmini Amararatne

The founder of Lakmini School of Art, Lakmini Amararatne's childhood toys were pencil, pen and brush. For her, drawing was as natural as breathing. Her daily world taught her lessons in beauty. Home was the haven of inspiration. The family ensured a lively alertness to human issues. All the elements in the equation, cumulatively contributed towards the emergence of a child artist.

After a series of productive years of wholesome maturity, the erstwhile child artist, has now metamorphosed into a teacher of art. She, presented her creative efforts to the world, at a solo exhibition titled 'Rhythm of Life." held at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery on 2012.

She began her significant art efforts at the age of seven. From then on she has progressed along into high professionalism. Awards came along in surprising profusion. National and international recognition arrived as a matter of course.

Her latest works emerge in such a colourful background. A predominant idiom in her latest works is the portrayal of swirling waves of colour. This staple motif in her present paintings, is a symbolisation of the turbulent day-to-day world, replete with worldly and secular responsibilities.

The agitated external world impacts telling upon her life. With a view to impart her knowledge to the next generation on the contemporary techniques of painting on "oil on canvass",water colours, and line drawings, she started her own Art School in 2003.

Thereafter followed by many "student-teacher Exhibitions" which paved the way to many students to take up higher studies in the profession of architecture,Interior/dress designing and other related fields.

She was  a Former Art Teacher of S.Thomas' College Mount Lavinia. and was the former Vice - President Of The Ceylon Society Of Arts from (2008 - 2010).

She was awarded the Honorary title Kalapathi Master of  Arts on the 22nd of September 2006.

She also served as the Vice President of the Ceylon Society of Arts.

She was awarded the Prestigious Swarnabushana Award for her service to the country as an Artist on the 12th of October 2023.
